"Your next Lunch Crew"
- employee training reality!
One night last week I noticed my daughter sitting
in front of the computer. She had an open textbook on her lap, a dog-eared
notebook on the desk, a pencil on one ear, the cell phone to the other,
holding alternating conversations with two friends via call-waiting.
Both the stereo and the TV were on in the background. Her eyes were
fixed on the monitor, her fingers flew over a keyboard she never even
glanced at, and she was simultaneously downloading 4 songs from iTunes,
a movie trailer from New Line Cinema, a music video from Hollowood.com,
burning a music mix CD, researching the Urban Outfitters’ website
and instant messaging (IM) nine other school chums via e-mail and cell
phone.
When I asked her what she was doing
she smiled politely, and said “My homework.” Now I am about
as geek as it gets, and even I had a hard time understanding just how
she was able to keep up with all this information.
That scenario is not unfamiliar to most
of us with pre-teens and teens in the house. This is how many American
teenagers “study” and communicate in the 21st Century; mega-multi-tasking,
set to a multi-media soundtrack with a background layer of random and
rampant instant messaging. If that picture disturbs you, it may help
to know that my daughter’s fortunately an A student.
Keeping her homework habits in mind,
how will this future workforce react to the restaurant trainer who “orients”
them via a static keyed point of sale system, text-filled manual backed
with an HQ-issued Lesson Plan, Power Point deck, hour-long peppy speeches,
video and a flip chart listing the “10 Steps of Service”?
Those young trainees will be making more moves than U-Haul, and it won’t
be to your operation, because the word gets around quickly in their
wired world.

You’d best prep, study, and gear up for the next generation of
learning, and how it’s going to change the way you recruit, teach,
and retain your company’s future human capital. When we change
how we learn and what we know, we also change who we are and what we
do, both as a company and as an industry. Transforming the way we share,
store and exchange information internally will alter the way we serve,
sell, market, and grow our businesses. Count on it. You don’t
build business, you build people. People build business.
When you are
choosing your next Point of Sale system for your Sonic Drive-in,
first know that training on this interactive marvel is a breeze
and what's more inviting is it is the world these young wizards know!
Training in interactive environments has already been documented by
Harvard as the most effective way to retain instruction on task driven
concepts.
Imagine that our Presto touch screen
could handle multiple order entries, call up a training video or a fact
sheet based on a PDF file that shows how to prep the new Sonic Toaster,
take a JPEG picture of the person operating the terminal for mystery
shop purposes, tracking the time & order process, and offer suggestive
up sells all within a matter of seconds. And if all that isn't enough
they will be mobile with a tablet PC that allows order taking on the
patio or drive-thru, or roaming the sacker area with a new Bluetooth
headset talking in full duplex sound to your customers.
No

POS is over! It's time you get ready for these smart, resourceful, ready
to learn, interactive junkies known as "your next lunch
